In this post…
A season of change is upon us. Turning 65 last month was a milestone that prompted me to reflect deeply on the passage of time and the cycles of change that have shaped my life and the world around me. Over the decades, I’ve witnessed periods of both darkness and light. As 2025 dawns, I find myself contemplating the lessons of the past and the hope that lies in understanding the cycles of history. Now is not the time for despair, but it is a time for eternal vigilance.
Childhood Memories: A World Divided
My earliest memories as a child were of the Civil Rights Movement. At that time I lived in the decidedly red state of South Carolina. Growing up in the South, I remember when local public swimming pools had “white days” and “black days.” While the local white population was allowed to use the pool any other day, local people of color could only swim on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays, since the local town assumed that any ‘good white people’ would be in church on those days. These were not only racist policies but stark reminders of the systemic injustices of the era.
Yet, even during the darkness of segregation, brave individuals fought for equality and justice, lighting the way for transformative change. My grandmother was one of them, at great personal cost to herself. The passage of the Civil Rights Act, the end of Jim Crow laws, and the broader societal shifts that followed were proof that darkness could give way to light.
The Wheel of the Year: A Symbol of Cycles

In many Pagan traditions, the Wheel of the Year symbolizes the natural cycles of life: birth, death, and rebirth. It teaches us that no period of darkness is permanent. Just as winter inevitably gives way to spring, periods of hardship and struggle are often followed by renewal and growth. The Wheel of the Year is not only a reminder of the seasons of the year. It is also an acknowledgment that like the year, there are seasons of darkness and of light within our own lifetimes, and from generation to generation. This concept has been a guiding light in my life, offering solace during difficult times like the ones to come and reminding me that better days are always possible.
Entering Another Period of Darkness
As we stand on the cusp of 2025, it’s clear that we’re entering another challenging period in history. The cracks in the foundation of democracy in America have deepened, leaving many of us feeling disheartened and uncertain about the future. Voter suppression, the erosion of civil liberties, and the rise of authoritarian rhetoric signal troubling times ahead. The polarization and misinformation that pervade our society threaten the principles of unity and fairness that democracy is built upon.
But acknowledging this darkness isn’t about despair. It’s about preparing ourselves for the challenges to come while holding onto the hope that this too shall pass. History shows us that no era of oppression or hardship lasts forever. Those who endure often emerge stronger, wiser, and more united. Change often happens slowly, and it’s sad that so many Americans no longer value the core principles that America was built on, but if we give up, change will never come.
Lessons from the Past
The darkness of the Civil Rights era was met with the unyielding courage of individuals and communities who refused to accept injustice. Their actions brought about a period of light, progress, and hope. Similarly, other dark times in history—from the Great Depression to World War II—have been followed by innovation, rebuilding, and growth. These periods remind us that human resilience and determination are powerful forces for change.
I believe that one of the paths forward will be a return to the values our Pagan ancestors held true. When we hold on to respect for each other, reverence for nature, service to others and to ourselves, and spiritual growth, we hold a vision for the future. One of the first steps in any magical practice is to set an intention. By holding on to a vision of the future that includes diversity, equity, and inclusion, we make a better world inevitable for all of us.
Hope for the Future
While it’s tempting to feel overwhelmed by the challenges ahead, the Wheel of the Year teaches us that light will return. Those of us who live long enough may witness a great awakening—a period when people come together to rebuild trust, restore democracy, and create a more equitable society. It won’t happen overnight, and it won’t be easy, but the seeds of change are often planted in the darkest of times. The future is up to us who are willing to answer the call for change.
What We Can Do Now
As we navigate this period of darkness, it’s crucial to remember that we all have a role to play in shaping the future. Here are a few ways to stay engaged and hopeful:
- Stay Informed: Knowledge is power. Understanding the challenges we face and the forces at play can help us take meaningful action.
- Build Community: In times of division, finding common ground with others is more important than ever. Strength comes from unity.
- Advocate for Change: Whether through voting, activism, or supporting organizations working for justice and equality, our actions can make a difference.
- Hold Onto Hope: The belief that light will return is not naivety—it’s a testament to the enduring human spirit.
Conclusion: The Cycles of Life
At 65, I’ve seen enough of life to know that change is inevitable. The darkness we face today is daunting, but it’s not insurmountable. The lessons of the past and the cycles of nature remind us that brighter days are ahead.
As we move into 2025, let us remember the wisdom of the Wheel of the Year: after winter comes spring, and after darkness comes light. Those of us who persevere through these challenging times may one day look back and see how our collective efforts helped usher in a new era of awakening, growth, and unity. Maybe then we can look upon this period of darkness as a needed catalyst for change that led to a new world for us all.
